Deskrizzjoni
English: Extent of the Saadian empire during the reign of Ahmad al-Mansur.

Notes: Map is the same as earlier map uploaded to Commons (Saadiens - Carte fin XVIe siècle.jpg) by Askelaadden, but with minor revisions to clarify the legend and status of some areas, as per the original map in the cited source (Sluglett & Currie 2014).

  • First change: Revised the legend. The original map legend showed striping as "vassals" but this was unclear since there were two different colours/shades in the striped area. The legend now includes two labels for the two different shades, as per the source map. The darker-striped "direct rule" area in this case refers to the Saadian invasions towards the south in the 1580s and especially in 1591, as explained in the source itself and in other relevant scholarly sources (e.g. Abun-Nasr 1987, "A history of the Maghrib in the Islamic period", pp. 216-217; or Encyclopedia of Islam 2, "Sa'dids"; etc). I've labelled this simply as "Saadians (after 1591)".
  • Second change: The original map shows an area of vassalage between Tuwat and Taghaza. I've changed the shade of the stripes in this area to reflect this.
  • Third change: To make the two shades a bit clearer, I've made the background land colour slightly lighter. If the shades are not clear enough in the legend, I could make the legend bigger or the background colour even lighter.
